Instead, recharge the battery as soon as your tool starts to slow down. Never deep drain unless you have a NiCd battery that’s showing decreased capacity due to the memory effect.

• Don’t Leave Battery on Charger: Unless your tool instructions specifically say to store the battery on the charger, be sure to remove it after charging is complete. Overcharging can damage a battery and shorten its life, and not all chargers shut off automatically.
• Don’t Overheat Battery: Heat is deadly to rechargeable batteries and can even cause them to explode. If the battery gets hot to the touch, let it cool down before recharging or using. Don’t store rechargeable batteries in a hot car, attic, or overheated storage area.
• Don’t Get Battery Wet: Don’t expose your cordless (or corded) tools or batteries to water. Immediately wipe away any moisture on the tool or battery

Setting up my new laptop with seven types of Linux – and Windows 10

A few months ago I bought an ASUS x540sa notebook, and I’m happy as an inexpensive system.

The one thing about it that I was never really happy with was the 15.6-inch display, because the display size determines the overall system size (and indirectly the weight), and I prefer to carry smaller/lighter laptops in my backpack. In addition, the larger display consumes more power, thus shortening Asus a32-k52 laptop battery life. Despite that, though, I have been using that laptop quite a lot, and I’ve been very pleased with it.

A week or so ago, I saw another very similar ASUS notebook on sale here in Switzerland at about the same price (CHF 300.-), but with a 14-inch display. Not only does that smaller display avoid my complaints about the larger X540S, but because it has the same resolution (1366×768) I think the display looks better on the smaller size.

I wish that I could tell you for sure what the model number of the new system is, but I’m can’t. I can say for sure that what is written on the box, and on the sticker on the bottom of the system, is R414SA. However, when I went to the ASUS website to verify the configuration, I couldn’t find any mention of that model – or of any “R”-series model!

Then things got even more confusing, because while I was slogging through the Windows 10 setup, I happened to look at the System Info screen, and that identifies it as an X441SA.

So I went back to the ASUS web page, and I couldn’t find anything about that model, either — but at least there is an “X”-series.

Then, just to complete the confusion, I noticed that on the web page of the store that is offering this model in Switzerland, it says that it has an Intel N3710 processor, but the one that I got actually has an N3160.

Anyway, be that as it may and whatever this model is actually called, I still think it is better suited to my needs and use. Here is a more complete comparison of the specifications of the two systems.

Depending on your use, the smaller amount of memory could be a disadvantage — but honestly, if you are doing something that needs 8GB of memory, this is probably not the right notebook to be using anyway.

As with all of my laptops (and desktops), the primary use of the notebook will be with Linux — but I will at least make an attempt to keep Windows on it. Rather than make this a long drawn-out description of the installation process, I am just going to hit the high points:

Windows 10 Home

What can I say? It came pre-loaded, so I walked it through the setup and configuration process. It would be more accurate to say that I dragged it through the process, or I allowed it to crawl through the process.

It took an hour or so to answer the questions (no, I don’t want to send my personal data to Microsoft, no, I don’t want to send my browsing history to Microsoft, no, I don’t want to connect to unknown WiFi networks just because someone I know connected to them once, or because Microsoft thinks they are nice) and then let it complete the setup and install the first batch of “critical patches”.

Then it immediately wanted to “Upgrade to Windows 10” (don’t ask me what this means for a freshly installed Windows 10 system), so I let it do that. It downloaded 4GB of data, and then spent another hour and a half installing that. Once that was done it seemed to be quiet for a while – but the next day it once again said that it needed to install “critical updates”, and it downloaded another 4GB and spent another two hours installing it. Now it seems to be happy about updates, at least for the moment. But every time I boot Windows, the performance monitor shows the disk access constantly running at a minimum of 40 percent.

openSUSE Tumbleweed (KDE)

As always with my Linux installations, this was the first to be installed and it will control all of the multi-boot operation from now on. Installation took about 20 minutes, and I had absolutely no problems with it. All of the hardware was recognized and properly configured, including the nasty ASUS “clickpad” pointing device.

Manjaro 17.0.1 (KDE)

Installation took less than 15 minutes, and everything works.

Debian GNU/Linux

Because we are getting close to the release of Debian 9.0, I decided to use the Stretch RC3 installer. This probably saved me some trouble, because when I installed Debian 8 (jessie) on the ASUS X540S it didn’t handle either the display or the clickpad properly, but the Stretch installer had absolutely no problems at all. I chose the Cinnamon desktop for this installation – I think this is the first time I have used Debian Cinnamon, and it really is nice. Significantly nicer looking and easier to use than the standard Debian Gnome 3 desktop.

Fedora (Gnome 3)

Again, since we are getting pretty close to the Fedora 26 release, I decided to install 26 Alpha. Again, no problems and everything works.

Solus (MATE)

Because I already have Solus with the Budgie desktop installed on the other ASUS, I decided to try the MATE desktop on this one. No problems with the installation, and the desktop looks very good. They have done a good job of integrating MATE with the Solus design philosophy.

Ubuntu 17.04 (Unity)

No problems. Just think, this might be the last time that I load a system with Unity!

openSUSE Leap 42.3 Alpha (KDE)

Again, because I’m loading the newest versions, and in hopes of avoiding problems, I went for the 42.3 Alpha instead of the stable 42.2 release. The installer didn’t like the clickpad, so I had to use a USB mouse for the installation process, but the installed systems works with everything just fine.

The bottom line here is that I installed and configured seven Linux distributions in a lot less time than it took to setup Windows 10 – without even including the hours that Windows spent on “upgrades” after the setup was complete. More importantly, every one of those Linux installations boots faster and is more pleasant to use than Windows 10 on this notebook.

DELL backs the PC market again, saying a pc-as-a-service program is about to come

For the umpteenth time, DELL technology has reiterated that the computer is very important for the company, it will not withdraw from the market.

But PCs occupied only a few minutes of CEO Michael Dell’s opening keynote at Dell EMC World in Las Vegas on Monday. PCs are the engine that keep enterprises chugging, he said.

Instead, Dell spent time educating attendees about the new Dell Technologies and its products. It’s been less than a year since the US$67 billion Dell-EMC merger was finalized, and a lot of focus was on answering burning questions about the company’s future.

Dell did say the company would offer the PC-as-a-service worldwide by the end of the year, with more details about the program to be shared on Tuesday. HP and Microsoft are offering PC-as-a-service options, allowing customers to buy devices and support and pay on a monthly basis. That option reduces the hardware acquisition and support costs for companies.

Michael Dell started Dell as a PC company in 1984 when he was 19 years old. But today, the PC market is limited, and Dell’s approach is much like Intel’s, which is focusing on enterprise IT infrastructure. Dell is now focused more on server, storage, cloud, networking, and internet-of-things offerings.

The possibility of explosive growth in the PC market is remote, especially with mobile devices and tablets also being used for computing. Worldwide PC shipments will remain stuck in the 250 million to 300 million range, and most new purchases will replace existing PCs. The upgrade cycle is slowing down to about five or six years.

Research firm Gartner predicts PC shipments to touch 266 million in 2017 and 272 million in 2018, compared to 268 million in 2016. Shipments in that limited market will be shared among Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus, Apple, Acer, and other vendors.

Dell’s PC shipments grew by 6.2 percent in the first quarter of this year to 9.6 million units, according to IDC. Dell was the third largest PC maker behind HP and Lenovo and held a 15.9 percent market share. Worldwide PC shipments during the quarter totaled 60.3 million units.

Voice assistants like Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana, Amazon’s Alexa, and Google Assistant are processed in the cloud and delivered to users on mobile devices and PCs. Social networks, email, and video streaming are also processed on servers. New technologies like image recognition and language translation also happen on the cloud.

Dell talked about raising the digital IQ in organizations, and speeding up the digital transformation process. The company announced new PowerEdge servers and all-flash EMC storage products.

The company’s other products include VMware, which provides virtualization technologies to balance server, storage, and networking operations. The Pivotal software environment provides the tools to build cloud services. The company also introduced new networking and storage products for converged infrastructures. The company also talked about putting security technologies from RSA for threat assessment at different levels of data movement.

HP’s Elite x2 can clone the right surface at the right time. On Monday, Microsoft’s Panos Panay shattered our dreams (and many others, no doubt) when he said no Surface Pro 5 in the near future to replace the fast aging surface Pro 4. Come on, Microsoft, it’s been 18 months and only apple can get together for many years!

The Elite x2 will offer a maximum of 16GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD storage, compared to 16GB and 256GB for the Surface Pro 4. The base $1,099 Elite x2 in the United States will have the Core i3 CPU, 4GB of LPDDR3-1866 SDRAM, and 128GB M.2 SATA SSD.

The closest Surface Pro 4 in configuration and price to the Elite x2’s base model has a Core i5, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB PCIe SSD, for $849 (discounted from $999). The Core i5’s graphics is Intel’s older HD Graphics 520. It’s worth noting that the Core i7 Surface Pro 4 offers Intel’s more powerful Iris graphics, while the new Elite x2s have no such option.

The HP Elite x2’s touch display is now the same diagonal width as the Surface: 12.3 inches, up from 12 inches in the Elite x2 1012 G1 model we tested last year. The resolution also increases, from full HD (1920×1080 pixels) to WQXGA+ (2736×1824 pixels). Corning Gorilla Glass continues to protect it. The display has a rear kickstand with a good 165 degrees of tilt.

With the Elite x2 you also get what looks like a nicer keyboard (all models include a pen, too). There are actually two keyboards, and the one you get will depend on the model you buy. We have little information about the Advanced Keyboard, however, other than that it has NFC and a Smart Card reader.

The base $1,099 model comes with the new Collaboration Keyboard, designed to support videoconferencing. The Collaboration Keyboard has buttons dedicated to calendar, call answer/end, and presentation functions. As for typing, the keys are backlit and have a good 1.5mm of travel, plus there’s a large clickpad. There’s even a pen loop and an easily cleaned polyurethane back cover. It’s all wrapped in an aluminum keyboard deck that could feel sturdier than the lighter, plastic Type Cover and Signature Type Cover for the Surface Pro 4.

What we don’t yet know is whether the magnetic connection between the keyboard and the tablet will be stronger this time around. When we reviewed an Elite x2 a scant year ago, it seemed too easy for the keyboard to separate from the tablet while sitting on a lap.

And you can open it up and replace things!

The Elite x2 retains one big advantage over the Surface Pro 4: You can actually open up the Elite x2 for repairs. To be fair, it takes time and money to make a tablet serviceable, and the Elite x2 isn’t cheap. But you don’t have to be a corporation (the Elite x2’s target market) to appreciate being able to open up the back and, say, replace the display or the battery, and even the SSD and Wi-Fi card.

HP’s Elite x2 debuts with many features we wish the Surface Pro 4 had. While we won’t know whether the Elite x2 truly does compete with the Surface Pro until we can review it, the up-to-date hardware it contains certainly gives it a promising head start.
